3rd printing (1983) of the 1978 novel by Alan Dean Foster who had ghost written the novelisation of the original film.
This is the first ever foray into an extended universe beyond the movies.
Foster's Star Wars contract allowed for Splinter of the Mind's Eye to be filmed and it could/should have formed the plot that instead became The Empire Strikes Back. It didn't because Han Solo is notably absent from the novel; unlike Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford had not yet been contracted for any potential sequels.
